A professional development program for training learning, and educational professionals. Invest yourself, learn from an expert, and network with other trainers to bring added value to your company. Become one of Pike’s Peak Performers today!

Speaker

Bob Pike has well-earned his reputation as “the trainer’s trainer.” He has been training since 1969, and is the pioneer of Creative Training Techniques Newsletter. Bob is currently founder and Chairman of the Bob Pike Group, and serves on the Board of Directors for both the National Speakers Association and the International Alliance of Learning. Bob still personally leads over 150 days of training & keynote addresses a year, covering a wide range of topics, including his specialty—best practices for trainers. Over the years he has shared his messages with over 100,000 people around the world. An outstanding speaker, Bob has presented at regional and national ASTD and other training conferences. He has earned his Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) and Council of Peers Award of Excellence (CPAE). In 1999 he was inducted into the Speakers Hall of Fame.

Agenda

8:00 AM—Registration and Doors Open

Continental Breakfast will be available.

8:30 AM—Morning Session

20 Best Ideas for Designing and Delivering High Impact Training That Gets Results Every Time!

Since 1969 Bob Pike has designed and delivered over 600 training programs of one day or longer. In this session Bob will reveal the top ten ideas for both design and delivery and his top ten classroom training strategies. Included will be:

Getting to the C.O.R.E. of Training: Powerful Closers, Openers, Revisit Techniques and Energizers—Including three tests for effective openers, three tests of an effective close, and templates to customize your own powerful openers and closers.

High Impact Materials: The right types of handouts can be combined to create workbooks that are used during class – and continue to be resources afterwards. Bob’s handouts will model them all and additional examples will be available in his appendix.

Top Ten Classroom Strategies: Throughout the morning Bob will model these top strategies, and at the end of the session he’ll pull back the curtain, and allow you backstage to see the classroom strategies that he used.

The morning will be full of practical ideas you can start using immediately!

11:45 AM—Lunch “Keynote” Session

Win the Talent Management War

Managers are hired for their technical and functional skills. Most often they are fired for their lack of people skills. Seven out of ten people don’t quit companies—they quit bosses. When performance is the question, training isn’t your first answer—it’s your sixth answer. And yet, getting others to understand that is often half the battle.

In this fast-paced session Bob will identify the other five steps to improve performance and his top secret weapons to insure that you develop and keep great managers—and great people.

1:30 PM—Afternoon Session

Motivating Adults and Transferring Training

How do you make sure people use what they learned?

In this highly-interactive session, you will explore practical techniques and strategies to use before, during and after your training programs to help participants feel good about the learning process while getting results that make a difference on the job. The workshop addresses:

Five ways to kill the motivation of over eager learners

Eleven ways to create a positive motivational environment in the classroom

The three people who have the most impact on transfer of training

Twenty seven strategies that can be applied before, during, and after the training to insure that training transfers.

4:30 PM—Closing Remarks

Want even more time with Bob Pike? Additional networking opportunity and special “Evening Dialogue” with Bob Pike at the Mid-Michigan ASTD Chapter meeting, 6:00–8:00 PM on Monday, September 22. Bob will present additional strategies and techniques, including answering “burning questions” from his top-notch audience of professional trainers and education experts.

Lori Randall is the Corporate Training Manager for Dart Container Corporation, headquartered in Mason, MI where she is responsible for developing the corporate training strategy as well as designing and delivering training to almost 7,000 Dart employees, world-wide. She currently supervises a staff of four – including trainers Ray Miller and Gary Laverick (also ASTD-SCMC members), an administrative support person, Kathy Sievert, and one summer intern (Arianna Dart). Lori has over 20 years experience in the training and meetings industry, with at least 14 years as an instructional designer and classroom trainer in the corporate arena.

Prior to coming to Dart five years ago, Lori was responsible for leadership and employee training at Foote Health System in Jackson, MI and prior to that, started a new training department for a large, mid-west uniform rental company headquarted in the Detroit area. Her early work history was with associations in the Lansing area, including as Chief of Physician Education at the Michigan State Medical Society and Executive Director of the Michigan Dental Hygienists Association. With this strong background in the association arena, she has been a member and strong supporter of ASTD, both national and the South Central Michigan Chapter, since early on in her career.

Through her training, Lori specializes in presenting creative and “participant-centered” learning experiences for employees on a variety of topics, including: personal accountability, improved communication skills, diversity/harassment, customer service excellence, and other leadership development topics. In addition to training for Dart, she occasionally trains similar courses for the Michigan State University Human Resource Development department, and plans to branch out this fall by offering some Saturday programs to bring some of her favorite courses to the general public. Some of her favorite classes to teach include a custom-designed course on personal accountability, “Thunderbolt Thinking” (a creative thinking course), “Fish Philosophy” (based on the Seattle-based, Pike’s Place Fish Market), “Feedback Fundamentals”, and Mindmapping. Her most difficult course? She says, “It has to be either conducting the “Fish Philoso phy” course to a group of nurses on a bus-ride to Chicago so that they could get CE credit for their trip, or the time I had to teach creative thinking skills to a room full of Engineers!”

Lori’s educational background includes a Bachelors of Science (B.S.) in Management and Marketing from Northern Michigan University. In 2004 she earned a Masters in Adult Education/online-learning (M.A.E.D.) from the University of Phoenix. She loves to read and considers herself blessed to have a career where she gets paid to continually read and learn new information.

Lori is the single parent of three “twenty-something” young adults, 2 daughters and a son. They are all living out of the house (for the moment anyway!) and in college or graduate school in East Lansing, Lexington, and Boston. She is active in the Lansing Area Emmaus community and her local church, working to develop strong Christian leaders. She has also served as a volunteer, on-call advocate for a local domestic violence project. She says that her most far-reaching leadership role was when she led a group of high school students on a work project in a Russian orphanage during the summer of 1997. This summer she plans to repeat that experience when she travels to Romania with an adult group to do volunteer work in orphanages, children’s hospitals, and gypsy camps. She loves to travel and has also recently been to the Grand Caymans, England, Australia and various places around the U.S.
